Mom's Pork Sausage Fondue

I can still picture my Mom checking this in the oven before a party. Brings back memories of fall, home and of course my Mom. This is still a big hit today!!!
I usually make it in the crock pot on low and also with hot dogs sliced, although the sausages, I think, are much better. The crock pot is nice because you can just leave it in there and serve with toothpicks. Also keeps warm that way.

2 pounds breakfast pork sausage

1 large onion, sliced in rings

1 pound brown sugar

3 apples, sliced and cored

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.  Cut sausage into thirds.  Put in a 9x13 inch pan.  Layer onions and apples on top and sprinkle brown sugar over all.  Bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.  Baste sausage with juice while cooking.  Add a small amount of water if needed.  Cover with aluminum foil during the last 1/2 hour.  Serve warm in fondue or crock-pot.  Better if made the day ahead.
