Mom's Bachelor's Buttons

Great holiday cookie my Mom got probably 50 years ago from an older lady that lived downstairs from us. The thing that makes these special is the flavor of the Brazil nuts, so if at all possible, do not substitute another nut, it's what distinguishes this cookie.

3/4 cup butter or margarine

1 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup coconut

1/2 cup Brazil nuts, chopped fine

1/2 cup candied cherries, cut fine

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream margarine and sugar thoroughly. Add egg and vanilla. Mix well. Add flour, salt and baking soda. Stir in coconut, nuts and cherries. Drop by teaspoonfuls on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
