Family Stories:

Karl Zastrow died in Germany before 1860, so far we have no information on his life excpt that he and Fredericke had 5 children. Fredericke married Johann (John) Raduechel after Carl died. In 1865 they immigrated to the United States with Ulrike, Carl and Bertha, Carl's children, and Johanna from her husband Johann. Carl's older two children, Ernestine and Edward (our ancestor) did not come with her at that time. Edward and his family came in 1882. The family settled in Germantown, Wisconsin for a year or two before moving to Wayside, Wisconsin.

Ulrike and Carl (Charles) moved to the Wyoming/Montana area. Ulrika married a rancher and from what i've been told it's still in the family. Carl (Charles) was a part of the Montana Sedition Project. A group if 76 German men and women that were tried for speaking negative things about the war duing WWI. This was casual conversation in bars etc. But anti German sentiment ran high and they were arrested, tried and found guilty. There is more about it on the website. These people were post humously pardoned in the 1990's both by the Montana governor and President Clinton.

The person I spoke with about all of this is a 3rd cousin, still living in Morrison, WI. I went there and spent the day with her. She is Bertha's grandaughter. John was 20 years younger than Fredericke and when she died he married Bertha. So the cousin I talked with was a Raduechal and Zastrow since Carl was Bertha's father. I was able to see the farm where John and Fredericke lived. Still in use today. She did not know where Edwards farm had been. But this was an amazing story she unfolded that day and to say I was speechless and confused is an understatement. There's actually much more to this, especially with the people who moved out west, but perhaps that's better told in person. Trust me, this was a messed up bunch of people.

But by all accounts, our great great grandfather Edward was a farmer with no drama. Except if you look at his picture on the previous page, he sure looks like Santa Claus doesn't he??? LOL
