Grandma Green's Coffee Cake

I found this in my mother-in-laws collection. The note stated "Mama's". We have very few recipes from her Mother, so this one is a treasure to find.

Mix:

3/4 c lukewarm water

1/4 c sugar; 1 tsp salt and

1/4 cup shortening

Stir into mixture 1 pkg gran. yeast-which has been soaked in 1/4 c lukewarm water for 5 min. Stir until yeast is dissolved.

Add 1 egg

Mix in first with spoon, then with hand 3 1/2 c flour, using enough to make dough easy to handle. Turn dough into floured board; cover & let stand 10 min; then knead until smooth & elastic. Round up & place in gr bowl. Cover & set to rise in warm place until double in bulk about 1 1/2 hrs.

1 lb gr walnuts mix together with 3/4 c sugar

Divide dough into 2 parts. Roll out on floured board 1/2 in thickness. Spread nuts & sugar mixture over dough which has been brushed with melted butter. Roll as for jelly roll. Place on gr pan. Bake 350 oven for 25 min.
