Mom's Icicle Pickles

This recipe is from my mom's recipe box. From the looks of it, one of her older recipes.

2 gal. pickles cut lengthwise, put in jar and cover with 1 pt. salt, 1 gal. boiling water. Let stand in this one week. Then drain. Cover with boiling water with a lump alum the size of a walnut dissloved in it. Let stand 24 hrs. Drain pickles. then take 5 pts. sugar, 2 1/2 qt. vinegar and handful mixed spices. Boil and pour over pickles while hot. Repeat this for 4 days. Then put in jars and seal.
