Hard Candy

I used to make several kinds of this every year when I could just pick up the oils at the drug store. For some reason they no longer sell them, but I did notice some really nice sites online that sold some fantastic flavors that I'd like to try. This makes a very pretty gift in little jars or even plastic bags.

1 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup + 1 tablespoon white syrup

1/2 cup water

Flavoring oil

Food coloring

Powdered sugar

Spread a large piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil generously with powdered sugar. In medium saucepan mix together, sugar, syrup and water. Cook over medium heat until candy thermometer registers 300 degrees. Do not stir while cooking. Remove from heat; add 1/2 teaspoon each of food coloring and flavoring oil. Stir well and pour slowly in ribbons over powdered sugar. Cool and break into pieces.
