Caramel Oatmeal Bars-Arlene

1 package caramels

1 cup flour

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips

5 tablespoons cream

1 cup oatmeal

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 cup melted butter

1/2 cup nuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt caramels with cream. Cool slightly. Combine flour, oatmeal and butter in a bowl. Press 1/2 of this mixture into a 9x13 inch ungreased pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Sprinkle chips and nuts onto crust. Pour caramel mixture over this. Sprinkle remaining crumbs over caramel mixture and return to oven 15 to 20 minutes. Chill 1 to 2 hours.
