1 cup water

1 cup vinegar

1 small onion

1 tablespoon sugar

1 (3 to 5 pound) rump roast

3 bay leaves

1 teaspoon salt

12 whole cloves

1/4 teaspoon pepper

14 gingersnaps, crushed

Mix all but gingersnaps. Let stand 48 hours, or longer in large glass bowl in refrigerator, covered. Heat 2 tablespoons fat and brown meat on all sides. Put in oven and roast with sauce. (can also do in crock pot). Roast until done to taste. Remove roast, put liquid through sieve. Put liquid in pan, add gingersnaps and cook until thick to make gravy. Serve with potato dumplings.
