Apple Bread-Peggy

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup shortening

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups chopped or pared apples (about 4 apples)

1/2 cup chopped nuts

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour loaf pan. Mix 1 cup sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt until smooth. Stir in apples and nuts. Spread in pan. Mix 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over batter. Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely.
