Family Stories:

David Carpenter and Jemimah Belden were traveling photographers in the mid 1800's. David had moved with his parents in the 1840's to Wisconsin. He apparently moved backed or traveled back to New York and married Jemima Belden but they must have again moved or visited Wisconsin since we know that Luzerne was born there. They are back in New York in the 1855 census and that is where David Jr. was born.

According to the family David Sr. died at a young age and Jemimah continued in the traveling photography business leaving David Jr. with the Lockwoods who were childless. After much begging she agreed to let them adopt him and he grew up going by the name of Everett Lockwood. We believe Luzerne stayed with her or the Carpenters, since he ends up in California, living in the same town as Ransome, David Sr.'s brother.

Jemima continued as a traveling photographer and did not remarry until the late 1860's. She remarried William Cowley who ran a saw mill in Stamford, New York. They had two daughters.
