Family Stories:

Michael, arrived in the United States in 1885, a year before Theresa and settled in Bessemer, Michigan after living there for one year, he moved to Langlade County Wisconsin. Theresa came over on the boat Bolivia, in 1886, with two children, Theresa, age 4 and Barbara, age 2 months.

The family lived near the Menominee Indians. Having only one brother, the girls had to help with the same chores boys would. Because of their location, the girls had about 3 years of public school and were taught organ, English and all the other things their mother passed on to them. The family lived on the farm and the Indians camped on the creek of Michael's land. They were always coming to the house to trade baskets for anything from food to clothing. One story has it that a young Indian would "hang around" the barn while the girls were milking the cows. Katherine, would squirt him in the face with the milk and all the girls would laugh hysterically. He apparently took this as a romantic gesture and asked Michael if he could marry her because he thought she was "fun". Mike was able to handle it...not easy as the Indians were used to getting their way from the Servi's. He got along well with them and was able to handle the situation.

Unterhutte, Austria (Bohemia) is a now deserted town. It once stood in the area marked on this map. Here is a short chronicle I found about Unterhutte, Austria, I would imagine it was written by someone who once lived there... Unterhutte. Note the Mages and Markroffs who were still there and fought in the two World Wars. This touching story by the founder of the German Bohemian Society in New Ulm, Minnesota is a good account of what probably happened to these small border cities like Unterhutte, after WWII... "A Youthful Quest Fulfilled".
